For those anxiously awaiting the new Blackberry 7 OS here is a quick run down of the features being offered:

Documents to Go Premium – Documents to Go Premium is already available on most phones but this is an upgraded premium version due to the acquisition of the DataViz technology.

Liquid Graphics – A new updated version of the graphics system with a clean and sleek user interface. The system is now running on top of OpenGL which accounts for the increased speed and explains the requirement for certain hardware.

Voice-Enabled Universal Search – Nothing exciting here as they are really just playing catch up to other phones. The real question is will it actually work unlike the iOS and Android versions.

NFC – This is the future of mobile payments, wallets, and is the predecessor to killing off credit cards. Watch this technology it’s going to be key moving forward.

BlackBerry Balance – Blackberry Balance is the latest rev of the software that was announced in January. This simplifies the separation of personal and business streams of data on corporate owned devices.

720p HD video recording

OpenGL Graphics Support – This will provide strong support for gaming and advanced interfaces which has the potential to bring it in line with Android and iOS phones.

Augmented reality – A key feature moving forward. Hold your phone up looking down the street and see specials for all of the new restaurants.

Built-in Compass – Not really a commonly used feature but a requirement to implement Augmented Reality applications.

Updated Browser – The Blackberry browser has always been fairly good. They are just taking it to the next level.

A few other interesting notes:

The BB Messenger application is going to stay with version 6.0.

This OS will not be available for upgrade on legacy hardware. You must purchase one of the new phones. Which means right now you have to get a Blackberry Bold 9900, Blackberry Bold 9930, or Blackberry Torch 9850.

The new OS and phones are still missing good business ringtone support so we recommend the ExecTones package.

It was late at night in a big city, meetings just got out, client wanted to go out for a great meal, and wanted us to pick. Our sales guy said absolutely we will find the perfect place. He turns to me and in a panic says, “where are we going to go? Its the dinner rush hour.” Not a problem I thought. Despite not knowing a single returatunt in the area I had the perfect reservation within 30 seconds. How did I do it? OpenTable for the iPhone.

If you are involved in sales or business development you undoubtedly spend a good amount of time at restaraunts with clients and coworkers. Unfortunately you don’t always know the hot resturaunts in that city let alone the neighborhood you are in. You also often don’t know what type of food your client will want or when your meetings will be done. All of this points to the need for an extremely flexible way for you to book the best place in town on a moments notice. We recommend the OpenTable mobile application which comes on the following devices: iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile, Palm WebOS, Blackberry, Nokia, and the iPad.

This is the perfect application for last minute reservations because it let’s you quickly search for restaurants near-by, within a specific price range, in a specific type of cuisine, and lastly let’s you see customer reviews. Once you have found that gem of a place they let you make reservations with one more tap. Let’s go through the steps of finding and booking that reservation.

The first thing you will need once you start the application is an account. Go ahead and register for an account. Each time you book a reservation through your account you earn reward points. 100 for an normal booking and 1,000 for a special bonus booking. These points can add up quickly and equal free meal for you. Now that you have an account its time to go through the steps.

First select Near Current Location.

You will see a list of nearby places to eat. Before searching go to the filter button and apply a few filters to narrow your search. The filter function is a crucial step which will make your search process go from many minutes down to seconds. On this screen pick the options that apply including price, cuisine, and whether or not you want to only show 1,000 point bonus locations. The 1,000 point locations are limited and are not at ideal times so I recommend not using that option when entertaining a client.

Now we can look at the results and pick our location based on the time slots where a reservation is open.

Lastly, pick your place and go to the reservations screen. Before making that reservation be certain to look at the other diners reviews. Don’t go anywhere unless it is getting high marks. 4+ stars is usually my filter. Once you have a good spot choose the time you want and in a matter of seconds you will get a confirmation saying your reservation has been confirmed.

The reservation system has never let me down in fact its often impressive to people that you can get that perfect place in under a minute. This is a must have tool for anyone entertaining clients, co-workers, and family while traveling.

ExecTones is going to start a new series which will cover the best business applications for iPhone, Android, and the Blackberry. Our focus will be on applications that make running a business or process easier, cheaper, and more reliable. The first topic will be shipping and logistics applications for the iPhone.

We will cover apps from the top three shippers as well as a recommended application which can track packages on almost any shipper. USPS, FedEx, and UPS each have their own applications that they release and support. DHL’s lack of an app was surprisingly missing in this collection but can be overcome by using an application that works across all shippers.

USPS: Free
The USPS app for the iPhone and iPod touch gives you access to the following features: Tracking & Confirming packages, finding USPS locations, finding collection boxes, zip code lookup, find automated postal centers, and price estimations for shipments. The application is clean, easy to use, and supports the GPS feature in your phone to make finding locations fairly quick. There application has been updated to support all of their new flat rate shipment options.

FedEx: Free
This application also allows you to track shipments and get price estimations but they have added additional features that the USPS application doesn’t have that we think are important to a business. They actually allow you to create shipping labels and have them emailed to you along with the ability to schedule pickups. Being able to do all of this from your phone without the need for a computer certainly opens up quite a few opportunities for how and where you can work on logistics in your business. The only drawback to this application is the requirement to login/register prior to using any of the features. This is fine for the avid shipper but will become annoying for a casual or home user who just wants to track a package.

UPS: Free
Much like the other applications the UPS application for the iPhone allows you to track, ship, get price quotes, and find near by locations of drop boxes and shipping centers. This application has the best tracking interface due to its design which makes it easy to see the status of many packages at once. The UPS app also allows you to give your shipments a nickname so that you can reference a package by something other than a 20 digit number. One key feature that we liked about this app was the ability to use your UPS address book. Any common shipping addresses that are in your UPS.com account are pulled down in to this app. A critical time saver that the other apps don’t have.

Track Packages: $0.99
If you are more interested in shipping than tracking then choose one of the three applications above and integrate it in to your workflow. If tracking is your primary use case then we recommend that you use an application like Track Packages because it supports tracking on all carriers. They have an easy to use interface, the ability to give nicknames to the packages, and a quick dial option to go directly to the support line of the major carriers if something goes wrong. The only feature missing from this application which is in others is the ability to scan the bar code of a package.

As always ExecTones will be here to provide you with the critical tips, tricks, and technologies to make running your business easier. If you haven’t already please look at our collection of Business Professional Ringtones for all major phones including your in office land line.

This could be a leak or purely a rumor, but mobile carrier Telcel is reporting that Apple will be shipping a new version of the iPhone hardware on September 30th, 2010 that contains a new antenna design. The new design supposedly solves the dropped calls and poor reception issues that many users have reported.

The end of September date seems to coincide with the end of the free case program so on one hand it makes sense. Apple releasing new hardware this quickly and at this time of year though is unlike anything apple has done in the past.

Either way, ExecTones will be there supplying business ringtones to the new device.

Verizon iPhone Overview

This could be the most authentic and true rumor to date about Verizon iPhone launching soon. According to Bloomberg report which cites, “multiple people familiar with the plan”, the phone will be released in January of 2011.

If this is true, it’s great news for Verizon and Apple, which is believed to have significant pent up demand. Of course this could be another rumor that isn’t true, it could be Verizon trying to get people to hold off on renewing their contract, or it could be true and Verizon could quickly accelerate to the leading iPhone provider. Whatever the case Apple has had an amazingly successful launch of their latest device selling 1.7 million units out of the gate.

Verizon iPhone Network Issues

One of the reasons that this rumor is still hard to believe is that Verizon has indicated they would want the Verizon iPhone to run on the 4G network. Unfortunately Verizon is still fairly early in the process for deploying this technology.

Anxiously awaiting that new Blackberry Bold 9650? Well that wait is coming to an end. Through a variety of sources it appears that the Blackberry 9650 is going to ship on May 16th, 2010. The pricing has not been released but if we go off of the inventory leaks from Sprint then the phone will come in at $199 USD after a mail in rebate. The mail in rebate this time around is for $100 USD. As usual an out-of-contract pricing option will also be available for $449 according to a report from Crackberry.

This phone is the next generation of the Blackberry Tour 9630 released a while ago. There are two key differences that are worth noting:

The old trackpad which so many users reported having issues with is being replaced by a new and improved version.

A version will be sold which does not contain a camera. Of course this is important for enterprise markets.

As always you can’t forget to put a professional ringtone on your new 9650. We think its the first thing you should download on your new device. ExecTones.com can help with this.

Their service is being called The PrintSpot and we believe its a great value add. One of the more annoying things about traveling is not being able to print those last minute docs and boarding passes easily.

The technology comes from PrinterOn Corporation which is a Canadian based company that sells to the hospitality industry. They have successfully deployed in 35 countries so far.
